Our Educational Philosophy

A Feast of Ideas, A Love of Learning

Inspired by Charlotte Mason's gentle, living approach to education, we believe children deserve more than worksheets and tests. They deserve wonder, beauty, and ideas that spark their imagination.

Living Books

Rich storybooks and literature that spark imagination—not dry textbooks. We learn through beautiful language and compelling narratives that stay with children for life.

Nature Study

Plenty of time outdoors exploring God's creation. Children learn to observe, wonder, and discover the natural world through all seasons—rain or shine.

Short, Lively Lessons

Keeping minds fresh with focused lessons that respect a child's attention. No marathon sessions—just purposeful learning that leaves room for wonder.

Art & Handicrafts

Hands-on creating that develops patience, skill, and beauty. From painting to practical crafts, children learn that making things with care matters.

Music & Poetry

Filling our days with beautiful sounds and words. Children read poetry, sing together, and develop an ear for rhythm and language.

Habits & Character

Building good habits and nurturing character through gentle, consistent practice. We're growing not just knowledgeable children, but kind and capable ones.

"Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life. The question is not how much does the youth know when he has finished his education, but how much does he care."

Meet Your Teacher

Hi, I'm Liz Hodes

"I love learning and I love teaching."

With over 20 years of experience in the teaching field — from public schools to private schools to homeschooling my own children — I've seen education from every angle.  And I've come to believe that the best learning happens in small, warm, family-like settings where children are known and loved.

I'm also a local artist who has received various awards from area studios and art shows.  I love helping others feel inspired and courageous enough to create their own artwork.  Creativity and beauty will be woven throughout everything we do at Little Grove School.

My own children will be learning alongside yours, so this truly will be a family-style community where we all grow together — exploring Truth and Beauty in the world around us.

A Day at Little Grove

Rhythm, Not Rush

Our days have a gentle rhythm that honors how children actually learn best—with focused lessons, generous play, and plenty of time outdoors.

Morning Gathering

We begin together with songs, poetry recitation, and calendar time. A peaceful start that connects us as a little community.

Focused Lessons

Short, lively lessons in reading, math, and language arts. We keep lessons brief and engaging to respect young attention spans.

Outdoor Exploration

Nature study, free play, and discovery time in our outdoor space. Rain or shine, we find wonder outside.

Living Books & Read-Aloud

Gathered together for rich literature—history told as story, science through narrative, and tales that spark imagination.

Lunch & Rest

A nourishing break to eat, rest, and recharge. Quiet time for younger ones, gentle fellowship for all.

Art, Music & Handicrafts

Hands-on creating, music appreciation, and practical skills. We end our day making beautiful things together.

Closing Circle & Pickup

We gather to reflect on our day with gratitude, then send everyone home with full hearts and curious minds.
